Welcome to our historical house “zum Schwarzen Adler – to the black Eagle”. A family affair since 1825.

The Adler Hotel is located at the entrance of the old village Appenzell by the river Sitter. An Italian restaurant is in the basement of the house, in Winter time you enjoy delicious cheese fondue in Adlerkeller. Our hotel guests benefit from a large selection of free digital TV and radio channels, free internet access (WLAN and LAN) and a Swiss breakfast. Some bathrooms have been recently refurbished.

The hotel is completely smoke-free.

If you stay 3 nights or longer you get the Appenzeller Holiday Card as a gift. With this card you travel free of charge to the Mount Hoher Kasten “Top of Appenzell” with its revolving restaurant, to the impressive Ebenalp (Aescher) and to the family mountain Kronberg.

In our hotel you choose from 20 rooms. The Adler and Broger Suite and the Family Room are located in the 400 years old wooden building. All of them are non-smoking rooms, each of them has its own WC with shower or bathtub. Some bathrooms have been renovated in a contemporary style. There is also an elevator in the hotel.

In summer you relax easily in comfortable garden furniture in the quiet Adler Lounge behind the house.

Bikers – welcome! We offer you a few parking spaces under the carport behind the hotel. So you can continue your journey on a dry seat and enjoy…

APPENZELL NATURAL COSMETICS – You shower and bath with the mild washing milk from LediBelle. These products dispense with artificial substances such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate SLS, which are found in 90% of all detergents and cleaning agents. SLS clean too thoroughly and wash out the skin’s natural protective acid mantle. The washing milk 300ml is available for CHF 29.

Restaurant Little Italy
For New Yorkers it is the former Italian district of Manhattan in the USA. Appenzellers associate this name with hospitality, delicious Italian cuisine at fair prices. In the summer months, feast on delicious antipasti, pasta, pizza and dolci on the terrace.

Fondue room “Adlerkeller”
Choose an aromatic Appenzeller cheese fondue – 300 grams per person – from our fondue menu. Accompanied by an exquisite drop of wine from the Bündner Herrschaft and the pleasure is complete. The unique ambience with a view of the over 450-year-old stones will transport you back to the late Middle Ages! Open during the winter season.


Traditions of Appenzellerland


The history of the house begins with the village fire in 1560. Originally called Oberegger Haus, the existing foundation walls of the Black Eagle date from before the village fire.

The house has been family-owned since 1825 and is now run by the Hans & Franz Leu family.
